TAKE ACTION

Natalie's Voice advocates for the following key groups to take action:

Helping Hands

CAREGIVERS

Caregivers have the right be informed that there is a sexual assault epidemic among people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Case managers need to be tooled for a discussion regarding a plan for Before/During/After an assault occurs in order to properly pursue justice and provide support.

PUBLIC AGENCIES

Public agencies have the obligation to protect, respond and support victims with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

We need:

  1. Public Service Announcements (PSAs) to grow the awareness that those with intellectual and developmental are a highly vulnerable population/ This should be communicated on freeway billboards, in newspapers, on posters and  via social media etc.

  2. Key agency stakeholders need to meet regularly and discuss the coordinate of response and support services; police, adult protective services, ombudsman, community licensing and those who administer SART exams.

  3. Legislation that supports victims and their caregivers to speak up. Secret settlements are a public health hazard and only protect the perpetrator, allowing them to freely abuse again and again. In California, track Bill SB820.

NON-PROFITS

Non-profit organizations have the opportunity to be educated, trained and resourced on the various needs of victims with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The following should be considered:

  1. Understand who the person's supports are; supported decision-making partners, conservators, guardians, family and friends.

  2. Accessibility to facility; ramps, elevator- clear path of travel.

  3. Communication tools; iPad, picture cards, sign-language, interpreter.

  4. Therapists; verbal, emotional, physical.
